Staging the clinically negative neck in T1-T2 oral cancers: USgFNAC and sentinel node biopsy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methodology This is a prospective observational study in 51 patients with T1-T2 N0 OCSCC. Pre-operative ultrasonography (US) of the neck was performed in all patients. USgFNAC was performed in patients where US was reported as indeterminate or positive. SNB was performed in all patients and was followed by elective neck dissection (END). The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and NPV of SNB, USgFNAC and US were calculated considering END and histopathology (HP) as the gold standard.

Fusion of Freehand SPECT and Ultrasound to Perform Ultrasound-Guided Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology of Sentinel Nodes in Head and Neck Cancer.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Criteria for ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (USgFNAC) for the detection of occult lymph node metastasis in patients with clinically negative head and neck cancer are based on the morphology of cervical lymph nodes. To improve the selection of lymph nodes for USgFNAC, we examined the feasibility of fused freehand single-photon emission tomography ultraso...

Objective The aim of this study was to establish the effectiveness of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the detection of metastasis in N0 necks of T1-T2 early-stage oral cavity cancers. Materials and Methods Twenty neck dissections were performed in 18 patients diagnosed with T1 and T2 oral cavity cancer, with an indication for elective neck dissection between November 2007 and January 2011. The ...
متن کاملSentinel lymph node biopsy accurately stages the regional lymph nodes for T1-T2 oral squamous cell carcinomas: results of a prospective multi-institutional trial.
PURPOSE The validity of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for T1 or T2, clinically N0, oral cancer was tested by correlation of sentinel node pathologic status with that of nodes within the completion neck dissection. METHODS This prospective, cooperative group trial involved 25 institutions over a 3-year period. One hundred forty patients with invasive oral cancers, stage T1 and T2, N0 inclu...
متن کاملProspective study of ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology and sentinel node biopsy in the staging of clinically negative T1 and T2 oral cancer.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare sentinel node biopsy (SNB) and ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for preoperative evaluation of the N0 neck in T1 to T2 oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). METHODS Fifty-one consecutive patients with T1 to T2 N0 oral cavity SCC were included in this study. Preoperative ultrasound was performed in all patients. U...
متن کاملSentinel node biopsy in lieu of neck dissection for staging oral cancer.
IMPORTANCE Neck dissection is the standard staging procedure to ascertain the pathologic status of cervical lymph nodes in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), but it results in multiple morbidities. OBJECTIVE To examine outcomes of patients with OSCC who underwent sentinel node biopsy (SNB) as the sole neck staging procedure. DESIGN Retrospective review of patients who...
